Lot Description
157.7 grains. A handsome and inviting piece, ranking among the better examples of this Newman number in collector hands. Both sides are warmly toned in orange and medium brown, the appearance a tad bright on the obverse, more natural and original-appearing on the reverse. The planchet is slightly ovoid, impression well centered on the obverse despite scant denticulation on that side, reverse off center to 12 o'clock with the upper border resting on the outside of the rings. The only real softness is confined to the lower left obverse periphery, where the letters M in MIND and B in BUSINESS are somewhat indistinct. Free of flan flaws, a few faint vertical scratches through the sun and gnomon are noted. Obverse die state middle to late with metal out along the crack within the letter F in FUGIO.<p>The Newman 10-G is the sole die marriage that composes the 1 Over Horizontal 1 / UNITED STATES type, lending additional importance to examples in all grades. This one get high marks for sharpness and in-hand appearance, although the few issues affecting the obverse place it in the same category as the handful of VFs with problems reported in the Retz census. That it would still warrant inclusion on that list is significant, of course, and suggests that specialists would be wise to give this offering serious consideration.
