Lot Description
Tompkins Die Stage 1/1, Rea et al. Die State a, the reverse lightly cracked through the tops of the letters UNI in UNITED and ST in STATES. Much frosty luster remains on both sides of this lightly toned, sandy-silver and golden-tan example. The surfaces are a bit subdued with a touch of glossiness to the texture, but there is little in the way of actual wear from circulation. As such, both sides remain boldly to sharply defined in most areas, the strike well executed for the type with only minor softness engaging a few design elements.<p>This is the median rarity among the five varieties known for the 1805-dated quarter issue. Neither the obverse nor reverse dies of the 1805 Browning-4 are known in any other pairing. The offered coin is tied for CC#5 in the 2010 Rea-Peterson-Karoleff-Kovach census.
