Lot Description
Given that the denomination saw only limited domestic circulation during the 1840s and was unable to compete with the Mexican dollar in the export trade, it is little wonder than contemporary bullion depositors requested only 20,000 silver dollars in 1844. The low mintage has long made this issue popular with collectors, who are also drawn to it by the "Quad Stripes" obverse of the date's only known circulation strike die pairing. Doubling is plain at the shield, where the vertical stripes are in groups of four (instead of groups of three as on all other dates in the series). Additionally, the top of an errant 8 can be seen in the hem of Liberty's garment above the first digit 4 in the date.
