Description du lot
1652 Massachusetts Bay Colony Pine Tree Shilling. Large Planchet. W-700, Noe-2, Crosby 4-F. Rarity-5. Without Pellets at Trunk. Fine-15 ... 76.0 grains. This is the Straight Tree variety, so called because of the distinctive shape of the tree that serves as the central device on the obverse. That side of the coin exhibits a few areas that are worn smooth from wear and due to unevenness in the planchet, although all other areas on both sides are generally bold at the Fine grade level. The planchet was clipped (as made) in order to have the coin conform to the authorized weight -- a common characteristic of the variety and one that explains why at least some portion of each letter around the periphery is absent. An original, lavender-gray piece with few significant handling marks.
