Tompkins Die Stage 1/1, Rea et al. Die State P. Mottled light silver-gray with patches of iridescent blue and russet toning deep into the fields. The strike is average with most of Liberty's curls sharp and all of the eagle's breast feathers present, but bold evidence of die clashing is noted on the upper reverse, which has blunted if not effaced several of the clouds and stars in that area. No surface issues aside from the usual light nicks and shallow scratches common to the grade assigned. The fine planchet drift marks that slant down from upper left to lower right on the obverse are as made and, in any event, are not readily evident during in-hand viewing.
The 1805 Browning-3 combines an obverse not seen in any other pairing with a reverse also used for the 1805 B-2 variety. The former may be the most readily obtainable variety of the 1805-dated quarter issue, but the initial die state without cracks offered here is very rare. A find for the specialist.
Steve M. Tompkins Commentary: As can be seen with this coin and the example in the next lot, my primary goal when adding coins to my collection was to acquire examples of the earliest and latest die stages when possible. The early die stage example offered here is much scarcer than those of later stages for the 1805 B-3 quarter.
