Lot Description
An attractive piece with blushes of olive-gray to otherwise warmly toned golden-brown surfaces. Nicely struck and nearly ideally centered, with full complements of denticles around both sides. The centers show a little of their typical softness, but devices on both sides remain well defined, the overall design is appreciable, and the diagnostics of the RR number are easily discerned. A faint horizontal hairline at central obverse is noted, but hardly detracts from otherwise smooth, softly frosted surfaces. Though not considered a rarity, this is not a variety that's easy to find this nice. Only one specimen in our digital archives from the last 20 years exceeds VF. That is the Richard August specimen in PCGS EF-45 that was described as having some light surface scale on the reverse behind the seated figure's head; it realized $4,080 in our November 2025 Showcase Auction. Ford's, earlier from the 1904 Mills sale, was a lovely EF, and Norweb's was a beautiful AU with a planchet void at the central reverse that reappeared in the 2015 Partrick sale as MS-60 BN (NGC).
