1897 Liberty Head Quarter Eagle. JD-1, the only known dies. Rarity-4+. Proof-61 Cameo (PCGS). This fully struck golden-rose specimen exhibits bold field to device contrast that readily upholds the coveted Cameo designation from PCGS. The 1897 inaugurates a run of relatively plentiful Proof quarter eagles that continues through the end of the Liberty Head series in 1907. We stress the word "relatively" in the context since, on an absolute basis, all classic U.S. Mint gold coins are rare. The 1897 was produced to the extent of just 136 Proofs, and this handsome survivor would do equally well in an advanced type or date set. Provenance: From the Jerome S. Reznick Collection. Earlier from Paramount's Grand Central Convention Auction Sale, November 1972, lot 1487. Collector tag with provenance notation included. PCGS# 87923. NGC ID: 288L.
