- M. Diatom Collection. 1839-D represents the sole instance of the famous "D" mintmark being on the obverse, and many collectors value the issue as a one-year type emission. The portrait was also reconfigured for subsequent dates, strengthening the assertion of a standalone type. These matters aside, what may appeal the most is the exceedingly handsome aspect: caramel smooth, original and delightfully tinged in deep tangerine-yellow and plum-gold. Dahlonega coins are notorious for frequent contact marks, but only the reverse of this well-loved example has any worthy of mention, that being a trio off toward the right. An especially humble and delectable half-eagle!
