- Lot Description
- From the South Texas Collection. A HIGH CONDITION CENSUS B-23, BB-105, and a very high end and wonderful CHOICE Mint State Bust Dollar for the type collector. While one of the more available issues for 1798, it is VERY RARE in Mint State. Frosty luster gleams from under a dusting of pearly iridescence. Blue and amber-gold hues frame the peripheries on both sides, fading to a pewter-silver color with tan and olive-gold accents in the center on the obverse and golden-crimson on the central reverse. Both sides have crisp strikes, with full definition to the hair curls and eagle's feathers. Even under the close inspection with a strong glass there are only a couple of the teeniest of ticks evident, and no traces of even the slightest cabinet friction. The eye appeal is excellent. Ranking among the finest enumerated in Dave Bowers' 2013 list of Notable Specimens behind the Stellar-Morelan; Fairbanks-Ostheimer; and Virgil Brand-T. James Clarke specimens. PCGS 3, NGC 0, CAC 2. The most recent PCGS-graded MS62 sold nearly a DECADE ago. There are NO other relevant auction comps. The Jack Lee PCGS MS63 sold for $115,000 in April 2008. Our consignor purchased this coin privately from Legend Numismatics in December 2013. VERY RARE in such lofty grades and prohibitively so any finer. A great type coin or high grade early dollar for the specialist. Good luck! Cert. Number 05762233 PCGS # 6877
