Near Gem Proof 1890 Liberty Half Eagle Just 88 Struck 1890 Liberty Head Half Eagle. Proof-64 Cameo (NGC). CAC. OH. This is a visually stunning near-Gem half eagle from a mintage of just 88 Proofs. Golden yellow surfaces are pristine in appearance and support sharp to full striking detail throughout. There is bold contrast between satiny devices and mirrored fields that certainly flirts with a Deep Cameo designation. Evidence of planchet polishing visible in the reverse is a testament to the great care under which this jewel was produced. As with all issues in the Proof Liberty Head half eagle series, the 1890 is rare and seldom offered in today's market. The latest research from specialist John Dannreuther (United States Proof Coins, Volume IV: Gold, 2018) suggests that just 35-40 distinct example of this issue remain.
