Description du lot
Deep orange-honey surfaces with lively retained luster and warm olive and pale rose highlights. Struck from a heavily clashed obverse die and with some natural planchet granularity, no doubt as struck, affecting the letters CA in AMERICA - many issues in the denomination are affected by poor planchet quality at the Charlotte Mint. From the second of three years of the design, its mintage of 9,803 pieces represents the second smallest output of the denomination within the Type II series from any mint, 1854 to 1856. A neat opportunity to add something other than a common date Type II gold dollar to your growing U.S. gold type set or, of course, a find for the advanced Southern gold enthusiast.
