Heck DS4, Breen Die State IV. Blended autumn-orange and olive-brown patina provides an attractively original appearance for both sides of this desirable Liberty Cap cent. The strike is ideally centered and well executed, resulting in universally sharp detail in the absence of all but light high point wear. A faint obverse spot sits atop Liberty's head, this being the only blemish of note since the few marks present are minor and easily overlooked during in-hand viewing. Although Dr. Maris nicknamed it "Separated Date," Sheldon-26 is better known as the Severed Locks or "Severed Hairs" variety because the points of some of Liberty's hair curls were severed when the obverse die was reground to remove clash marks. This die also appears in the S-25, NC-8 and NC-11 pairings. The Widmer Family specimen is not only a highly desirable S-26, but also a significant Choice AU type coin to represent the Liberty Cap large cent design.
