- Tompkins Die Stage 4/4, Rea et al. Die State f. Tompkins Plate Coin. The primary point of interest for this coin is the terminal state of the 1821 Browning-4 dies that it represents. It was struck after a remarriage of the obverse die, following a pairing as 1821 B-3. Tompkins Obverse Die Stage 4 is attributable by the presence of a light crack through star 12 to Liberty's hair, which our consignor describes as the scarcest die stage of the variety in his 2008 early quarter reference. Boldly toned surfaces are dressed in steel gray and charcoal-olive, and they retain plenty of bold to sharp strike detail to the design elements.
Steve M. Tompkins Commentary: The smoking gun in determining the remarriage for this obverse die with the 1821 B-3. Be careful when you see the obverse die crack on any 1821, as the coin it might be an example of the rarer B-4 variety.
