Lot Description
Undated (ca. 1652-1674) St. Patrick Farthing. Martin 1c.33-Ca.20, W-11500. Rarity-7+. Copper. Nothing Below King. VF-25 BN (NGC). A deeply toned example with marbled steel-brown and golden-copper, with some additional color provided by faint remnants of the brass plug on the crown above King David. The obverse is slightly off center to 9 o'clock, die sinking at upper left, letters in REX also faint, light cracks arcing from the top of the angel's head to the letter T in FLOREAT, all of which correspond to the latest state of this die reported by Syd Martin. The reverse is off center to the left with the letters BS in PLEBS particularly soft. The central design elements on both sides are sharp for the grade, as are many of the other peripheral features. Surfaces are a bit rough overall, certainly not unusual for a mid grade survivor of this type, but there are no marks worthy of mention apart from a thin, dull obverse scrape through the letter X in REX. An elusive die pairing, this piece joins only three others in lower grades from the author's personal collection as listed in Syd Martin's 2018 census. Provenance: From the Bill Gleckler Collection. PCGS# 42. NGC ID: AUAR. Click here for certification details from NGC.
