- 1798 Draped Bust Silver Dollar. Heraldic Eagle. BB-125, B-8. Rarity-2. Pointed 9, 4 Berries. AU-55 (PCGS).
Attractive deep silver-gray surfaces display an even dusky tone, with rich peripheral luster on the obverse and nearly full luster on the reverse. Only tiny scattered marks, including a vertical scrape low on Liberty's neck, and an apparently natural depression between the shield and olive branch on the reverse. Very attractive for the grade, a handsome dollar. Typical die state, BB II, with slight evidence of the crack to the letter L in LIBERTY and evidence of die clashing. A long vertical die flaw in the left obverse field is a hallmark of this variety.
Vying with BB-105 as the most frequently encountered die marriage of the 1798 dollar, BB-125 is a popular variety to represent the Draped Bust, Heraldic Eagle design in a type set. With most survivors grading VG to VF, however, this variety is scarce in EF while the present AU example is rare from a condition standpoint. It is, in fact, included in the list of "Notable Specimens" for the variety in the 2013 reference The Encyclopedia of United States Silver Dollars: 1794-1804by Q. David Bowers. The only higher graded example in that listing is a PCGS MS-64.
Provenance: Ex David Lawrence's sale of the Richmond Collection, Part II, November 2004, lot 1450; Jim McGuigan; our (American Numismatic Rarities') sale of the Cardinal Collection, June 2005, lot 34; private collector; Dr. Robert Hesselgesser; Ira & Larry Goldberg's sale of the Dr. Robert Hesselgesser Collection, September 2011 Pre-Long Beach Auction, lot 5071.
