Lot Description
1855-S Liberty Double Eagle. 14A. Broken A, Full E. MS-63 (PCGS). CAC. A lovely coin, needle sharp strike, with deep, rich luster. Graded MS-63, and still in its original gold label holder from PCGS (quite a few Central America coins have been broken out in an effort to upgrade them, as PCGS was quite conservative at the time--but such switching eliminated the pedigree). A coin that has everything going for it: sharpness, luster, brilliance, eye appeal and history.
The story of this treasure ship is well known, through thousands of copies being sold of Dave Bowers' award-winning A California Gold Rush History featuring the treasure from the S.S. Central America. This is indeed an ""immersion course"" in the California Gold Rush and numismatics at the same time, certain to make you an expert on the title subject. When this book was created it was financed by the California Gold Marketing Group, with no budget requirements. The result is a full color book, weighing about eleven pounds, with enough information to keep you absorbed in reading it for at least a week. Included is an inventory of all the coins recovered from the treasure, the history of the discovery, and more. Although the book is hardly inexpensive, it is but pocket change in comparison to what the coins sell for today. Check it out, and you will be delighted.
