Lot Description
This is a popular collector grade O-112. The mint hired John Reich as the replacement for Robert Scot and he set to work redesigning the nation's coinage. The half dollar and half eagle were the first denominations tackled, as they represented the workhorses of the American economy. His iconic Capped Bust half dollar is one of the most popular types in all of American numismatics, and next to Large Cents, is the most collected early series. The first reverse had an engraving error, where the die sinker mistakenly punched a 2 in the denomination, effaced it, then put the 5 over the remnants. This one is totally original, showing light, problem free wear. Richly toned, with dove, slate, and battleship hues. Some bluntness of strike, typical for the first year of issue, does not impact the eye appeal. PCGS 54, NGC 36, CAC 12. The most recent PCGS/CAC coin sold in a January 2016 mail bid auction for $1,430 and the current PCGS Price Guide value is listed at $1,775. Demand for high end examples, regardless of grade, is always strong. Cert. Number 35204112 PCGS # 6086.00
