- Lot Description
- 1870 Pattern Liberty Seated Quarter. Judd-924, Pollock-1029. Rarity-7+. Proof-65 BN (PCGS). Struck from the regular dies but on a copper planchet, this trial strike is toned in rich emerald-brown with purple, blue and gold iridescence that comes into view when held at the right angle of light. A sharply impressed and rather striking example of a Quarter in copper, this coin would make a neat pairing with a normal Proof striking in silver; or, if one were a bit more ambitious, this could be the jumping off point to a challenging collection of off-metal trial strikes of regular issue dies, of which there are several known denominations for the 1870 date.
