- Lot Description
- Exceptional quality for a counterstamped Stone Mountain Memorial half dollar of any type. The surfaces are strongly lustrous in a soft, satiny texture with light silver-rose patina adorning the obverse and engaging the reverse periphery. The host design is fully rendered and crisp. The counterstamps are strongly applied in Location #3, 212 over ALA. As described by Charles B. Rogers in the first volume (2019) of his comprehensive three-volume reference Unlocking the Mystery of the Counterstamped Stone Mountain Confederate Memorial Half Dollar (2019), this is one of the "State Auction Coins" of the Harvest Campaign. The Stone Mountain Confederate Monumental Association, which counterstamped these coins to use in publicity and for raising additional funds for the monument, approved 12 Southern state societies and the District of Columbia for participation in this campaign (North Carolina joined later; Missouri had no auction coins). Alabama was one of these states.
Also included in this lot is a heavily worn one-coin folder that indicates the coin was from the collection of Bernard Baruch and was priced at $3.25 and sold to benefit the United Daughters of the Confederacy. Though the folder has a split center, tape remnants and staining, rounded corners, heavy creasing and small tears, the image of the confederate flag is bright and the text is all legible.
