- 150.9 grains. A beautiful example of this iconic variety. Rich chocolate brown, an ideal shade, with slightly lighter contrasting brown on the devices. Glossy and reasonably smooth on both sides, with exceptional detail well beyond typical for the variety. Both sides are ideally centered and largely problem free. A natural planchet flaw is hidden on the edge just left of 6 o'clock on the reverse, with a bit of a related curved clip visible above C of CAESAREA. Some nearly invisible horizontal hairline scratches are seen under the plowhandles with concerted scrutiny, similar abrasion across the central shield is somewhat more noticeable, also seen at reverse rim above the well-formed fox. The die state is typical, late in SHI Die State 1, with a retained cud above VA of NOVA, an arc break below the plowhandles, but the adjacent cinquefoil still visible. <p>This piece is not included on the SHI Census, which is populated by three AU coins, an AU-, a single EF+, and three more EF coins in the top eight. We sold the third finest known in our October 2018 Archangel sale, an AU-50 (PCGS) that brought $19,200. The AU-58 (PCGS) Stickney-Craige coin is CC4; we last sold it in April 2022 sale for $50,400. The only other example of this sort of quality we've offered since the 2003 Ford sale is the E Pluribus Unum duplicate in our August 2023 sale, a PCGS AU-55 that brought $20,400. This piece would have upgraded Syd Martin, Dr. Gordon Shaw, and many other specialized collections. It may upgrade you as well.
