Lot Description
Manley Die State 5.0. Deep, rich, chestnut-brown toning on hard, tight surfaces that retain some faint mint frost. Minor marks and some ancient surface build up are commensurate with the grade, both sides fully original in preservation and pleasingly smooth during in-hand viewing. Boldly defined overall.<p>A scarce Spiked Chin variety, the 1804 Cohen-7 has an extant population of only 150 or so coins in all grades. Many of these were discovered since publication of the Breen half cent encyclopedia in 1983, the result of cherrypicking by early copper enthusiasts. Bill Eckberg (2019) reports that only 30 examples had been confirmed by 1960. While a number have now been certified in higher grades, the Widmer Family specimen wins high marks for originality, eye appeal, and overall quality at the Choice VF level. It is worthy of a strong premium.
