Lot Description
1870 Pattern Dime. Judd-849, Pollock-956. Rarity-5. Silver. Reeded Edge. Proof-66 (NGC). The Standard Silver type. Obv: head of Liberty right with ribbon in hair and star on tiara, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around, IN GOD WE TRUST on a ribbon below. Rev: fancy "cereal" wreath, STANDARD above in tiny letters, 10 / CENTS / 1870 within wreath. This deep steel gray Gem exhibits flashes of iridescent deep neon-blue, rose, and faint gold when viewed in a bold light source. The peripheral design elements are well-struck but we must note some softness at the star on Liberty's tiara and at 18 in the reverse date. The reverse die was slightly misaligned on this piece, though that is a regular occurrence for the variety. For the record, the coin is upside-down in the NGC holder. Tied for finest NGC-certified example of Judd-849. An ideal selection for those who enjoy richly toned coins.
