- 139.3 grains. A perfectly lovely coin, choice for the grade, with the sort of eye appeal that makes people want to own more than one New Jersey copper. The surfaces are smooth, hard, and glossy, toned an ideal and even shade of medium brown. A little curved mint clip appears under the date and above IB of PLURIBUS. The centering and strike are good, and a frame of denticles shows at the right reverse, though denticles are fairly sparse elsewhere. It's tough to imagine a better looking example at this grade.<p>The unfortunately named "Disappearing Knobs" variety is a fairly common one, and a fair number of high grade survivors are known. The presence of two Mint State coins atop the Condition Census and at least a half dozen more graded EF or better takes the pressure off coins like this from pursuit by most aggressive buyers, making this a positively ideal type coin. Of course, Mr. August was a very advanced variety collector, and he found this one perfectly suited to his needs as well. This is a nice coin.
