1843 Braided Hair Cent. N-4. Rarity-1. Noyes Die State D/B (N-13). Petite Head, Large Letters. MS-66 RB (PCGS). CAC. <strong>Die Variety: </strong>Newcomb-4 is one of 17 varieties of the date. Petite Head, Large Letters.<strong><em>&nbsp;</em></strong>The worn state of the obverse and reverse die appears as Newcomb-13.&nbsp;<br /> <strong>&nbsp;&nbsp;<br /> Die State: </strong>From a late state of the dies with the tiny die markers -- a die line from the rim to star 12, and spiked&nbsp;points at the top of N in ONE -- now gone from the dies.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<br /> <br /> <strong>Strike:</strong>&nbsp;Boldly struck throughout with strong hair details and full stars on the obverse, the reverse sharp and full in appearance.&nbsp;<strong>&nbsp;<br /> </strong><br /> <strong>Surfaces: </strong>Bold cartwheel luster can be seen on the surfaces of this frosty and attractive Gem large cent. No marks or blemishes&nbsp;are evident, and low magnification reveals only a few scattered flecks. <strong><em>This is the single finest example of the Petite Head, Large Letters variety certified by PCGS within any color designation. </em></strong>Absolutely choice for the assigned grade.<br /> &nbsp;<br /> <strong>Census Rankings: </strong>The Noyes Census pegs this specimen as tied for second finest seen, while the McCawley-Grellman Census has it tied for finest seen honors.
