Lot Description
Tompkins Die Stage indeterminate/5, Rea et al. Die State d, with damage to the reverse die at vertical stripes 1 and 2. This die state represents a remarriage of the 1806 B-3 pairing, after the reverse struck some examples of the scarce 1806 B-4 variety. This richly and originally toned example is awash in warm olive-charcoal patina with a tinge of mauve. Despite minor softness in the centers, this is a well struck coin in a Draped Bust quarter with most features bold to sharp. The surfaces are smooth and free of detracting marks - a premium example at the Choice AU level of preservation.<p>Despite the Rarity-1 rating, the 1806 Browning-3 is a conditionally challenging die paring whose Condition Census descends quickly down to the lower reaches of AU. The offered coin is ranked CC#7 in the 2010 Rea-Peterson-Karoleff-Kovach census.
