Plenty of frosty to modestly semi-reflective luster remains on both sides of this minimally circulated example. A touch of glossiness and light hazy silver tinting are noted for accuracy, but the in-hand appearance is dominated by rich reddish-rose and deep orange-honey colors. The strike comes up a bit short in isolated areas, such as at the eagle's right leg and talon, but most features and boldly to sharply defined. Trailing only the legendary 1854-S - an example of which is also being offered in this landmark sale of the James A. Stack, Sr. Collection - the 1876-S has the second lowest mintage in the San Francisco Mint quarter eagle series. A mere 5,000 pieces were produced during an era in which the double eagle continued to be the focus of gold coinage at the West Coast branch mint. Perhaps 200 to 250 exist today in all grades, and since Mint State survivors are in the distinct minority, the astute collector will recognize the value in a visually pleasing AU example such as this.
