- Tompkins Die Stage 2/1, Rea et al. Die State a. Splendid Choice EF quality with much frosty luster remaining on surfaces that are brilliant in the centers. The peripheries, on the other hand, are boldly and vividly toned in halos of cobalt blue and reddish-apricot iridescence. The reverse is rotated a few degrees clockwise from normal coin alignment, typical for an early die state example of this variety, while both sides are well struck with plenty of detail in the presence of overall light wear. There are no marks or other blemishes of concern on pleasingly smooth surfaces.
One of two Small 9 varieties for the 1819-dated quarter, the Browning-3 is the most common die pairing of the issue. The obverse is unique to this attribution and shows even spacing between the first three digits in the date. The reverse die, which is also used in the 1819 Small 9 B-4 marriage (actually struck before B-3), is readily identifiable by repunching to the digit 5 in the denomination. The offered coin nicely represents the type, issue and Browning number at a grade level that is readily accessible to many collectors.
Steve M. Tompkins Commentary: Probably the nicest EF-45 Capped Bust quarter you will ever find, with tremendous eye appeal. I passed on many higher graded coins that came along later because they just did not shine like this Gem EF example.
