- Lot Description
- The satiny lilac-gray surfaces relinquish lively cartwheel luster beneath their lovely peach and powder-blue iridescent highlights. One of just 12,000 examples of the date struck in a long procession of Philadelphia Mint issues from 1879 through 1888 and again in 1889 and 1890 that had small mintages. (More than 1.2 million quarters dates 1888-S were struck and represented the first branch mint issue in the denomination since 1878.) Sharply struck. We note some reverse toning spots at the 3 o’clock position. PCGS #5522
