Lot Description
145.3 grains. Rarely do survivors of this type in pinchbeck display the nice color seen here, especially when there is also enough evidence of handling present to result in a grade below AU from PCGS or NGC. Warmly toned in dominant medium copper, both sides reveal hints of lighter golden-brown close in to many of the design elements, where the original mint color was last to fade. The strike is remarkably well executed, and evenly so, while the hull of Howe's flagship and the top of the island carry much of the light wear, and to no great detriment. A hint of crimson color over the upper right part of the island is associated with light surface scale, but given the lack of other blemishes and overall smooth appearance, there is really nothing to complain about. This is a classic colonial era medallic type, eagerly sought by American collectors, but challenging to find in premium quality given the tendency for survivors in pinchbeck to have environmental damage, significant marks, and/or other evidence of poor stewardship on the part of early owners. We've seen certified AUs that can't hold a candle to this one, so the old maxim "buy the 'coin' and not the holder" is definitely applicable here.
