Lot Description: 1778 Machin's Mills Halfpenny. Vlack 12-78B, W-7830. Rarity-3. GEORGIVS III, Group III. VF-20 (PCGS). 111.0 grains. This late state example is devoid of detail at the upper left obverse and lower left reverse borders due to die swell, but all other areas exhibit bold definition to the major design elements. Warmly patinated golden-brown surfaces exhibit good gloss, light to moderate pitting in and around the central obverse the only noteworthy blemish, although it is as made and due to flan quality. In fact, this type as a whole is rarely found without major surface problems, and this is certainly an overall pleasing VF that would do particularly well in a circulated type set. PCGS# 466.
