Lot Description

Tompkins Die Stage 5/2, Rea et al. Die State d (B-2b), the latest known, Rarity-5+. Richly original surfaces are toned in a handsome blend of olive and pewter gray. The strike is nicely centered and, while the upper reverse opposite Liberty's bust is softly struck, most areas are boldly defined for the assigned grade. An ancient scrape in the obverse field under Liberty's chin blends nicely into the toning, in any event it is not distracting during in-hand viewing. Pleasingly smooth for having seen extensive circulation, in fact, this is a very nice Fine-grade example of the type, issue and die pairing.
