Lot Description
The Nightcap Variety St. Patrick Farthing Undated (Circa 1663-1672) St. Patrick or Mark Newby Farthing. Breen-211, W-11500. Copper. Sea Beasts Below King. VG-8. 69.2 grains. Another fun variety, with a substantial cone-shaped die break behind the king's head. Choice glossy dark chocolate brown, mostly smooth with some minor forgivable roughness seen under a glass. Planchet very thin but a decent amount of central detail was still brought forth, tiny natural flaw at 9 o'clock on obverse rim, smaller crudity above E. A small pit is noted below S of QVIESCAT. Splash is irregular but well placed at the crown. Evenly worn but problem free, an attractive piece for the grade. No example from these dies was present in the Griffee Collection, and your cataloger has not encountered this exotic and eye-catching die break before. PCGS# 42. Provenance: From the Ted L. Craige Collection.
