Lot Description
1853 Round 50 Cents. BG-430. Rarity-3. Liberty Head. MS-65 (PCGS). OGH. This beautiful Gem exhibits vivid olive-orange surfaces with a soft satin texture. This variety is one of several in the series recovered from the wreck of the S.S. Winfield Scott, lost off California in late 1853. BG-430, as we now know the variety, was illustrated as "current money" on the cover of Dye's 1854 or 1855 cambist, there with a value of 48 cents. Hodge's Gold & Silver Coin Chart Manualof 1858 showed the same variety, there also with a circulating value of 48 cents. By the 1861 issue of Hodge's, however, these pieces had declined to just 32 cents. Provenance: From the Oregon Collection. PCGS Population: 7; with a single MS-66 finer. PCGS# 10466. NGC ID: 2BKM.
