Lot Description
This is a very attractive looking CHOICE AU example the so-called 1853/2 overdate. The overdate was first discovered in 1960, as the feature is quite subtle, David Akers noting "the 2 is quite faint and easy to miss even on high grade specimens." Walter Breen's Encyclopedia, notes "possibly 8-10 known, none UNC." We know now, with sharp eyed specialists looking at all 1853 eagles, that while still quite scarce, it is not a major rarity in the series. In AU58, the date is RARE and Mint State examples are represented by just a handful of MS61 and MS62 pieces, combined at both PCGS and NGC. The present coin has a warm tangerine-tinged, honey gold surface that is a delight to behold. Nicely struck, with only a touch of weakness, this coin saw only brief circulation and just a few small abrasions from its life in commerce. PCGS 8, NGC 30. We suspect that there is duplication in that figure. The last NGC-graded example brought $4,080 in November 2017 and prior to that, one sold in July 2014 for $4,113. The current Collectors Universe value is listed at $6,500. Keep in mind that any Mint State example is going to be a five figure coin. A nice coin overall for the No Motto $10 Lib collector and we can see active bidding for this one. Cert. Number 3912199-001 PCGS # 008611
