- 1866 Liberty Half Eagle. Motto. AU-58 (NGC). Partially brilliant with blue and olive highlights. Original mint luster is noted around the stars, letters, and numerals. Only 6,700 examples were struck and survivors grading AU-58 or finer are important condition rarities as attested by the NGC Census date presented below. David Akers commented on the variety in his <em>U.S. Half Eagles 1795-1929</em>: "The 1866 is very rare in any condition and VF and EF are the most commonly encountered grades."
