- Lot Description
- 1836 Capped Bust Half Dollar. Lettered Edge. O-102. Rarity-3. MS-65 (NGC).
Upper end Condition Census for the 1836 O-102 dies, this is a beautiful Gem with intense mint frost to both sides. The reverse is brilliant apart from a dusting of iridescent peripheral toning, while the obverse exhibits delicate sandy-apricot toning throughout. Sharply struck with strong visual appeal. In the Autumn 2018 revision to Auction & Mail Bid Prices Realized for Bust Half Dollars: 1794-1839, Stephen J. Herrman lists several MS-65s as the finest known for this die marriage. The present example appears to be a newcomer to that listing, and it represents a fleeting bidding opportunity for advanced type and variety collectors.
PCGS# 39939. NGC ID: 24G2.
