- 1856-S Liberty Seated Dime. Fortin-101. Rarity-5. AU-58 (PCGS).
One of the truly rare dates in any grade from the vastly underrated series. Uniform and pleasing gunmetal-blue and gray toning spans both sides, with a solid strike evident and the surfaces show minimal nicks and circulation marks. Mintage of 70,000 as the desperately needed small silver coins entered circulation in the wildest days of the Gold Rush in California, naturally few were saved. In point of fact, there are likely less than 200 of these that exist today in all grades. This handsome example is probably in the top 20 known. PCGS Population: 2; 8 finer (MS-65 finest).
