Lot Description: Breen Die State III. This is an overall sharply defined early date large cent that was obviously set aside after seeing only limited circulation. The centering is not perfect, the borders wider at right than elsewhere, but full denticulation is noted for both sides. The only mentionable softness, in fact, is confined to the first letter A in AMERICA on the reverse, which is faint to illegible due to die swell in the opposite area of the right obverse field. Nice golden-brown and rose color overall with a generally hard, tight texture and some good gloss. A few microscopic pits on the obverse over and before Liberty's forehead and a concentration of fine pin scratches in the field below the ribbon ends are the only individually mentionable blemishes. This coin is tied for CC#4 in the 2000 Bland census for the Sheldon-154 dies, in which it is graded EAC VF35. Bill Noyes grades it EAC EF40, net VF35, and ranks it CC#4 in his census. An important offering for large cent variety enthusiasts that will see spirited bidding.
