- 1787 Fugio Copper. Pointed Rays. W-6600, Newman 1-B. URS-7. Cross After Date, No Cinquefoils, UNITED STATES. AU-55 (PCGS). This is a very distinct Guide Book variety with no obverse cinquefoils and a small cross (actually a quatrefoil) after the date. In the Newman 1-B marriage, this obverse die is paired with a reverse die on which the letters AR in ARE are cut over an errant ON.
A lightly circulated survivor, this coin exhibits dominant copper-brown patina that does lighten a bit over many of the devices. There are no significant post-production detractions, and planchet flaws (as struck) are minor and largely confined to the upper-obverse border in the areas of the sun's face and rays. Also as-made are bold clashmarks at the upper-reverse rim and in the right-obverse field. Definitely an important find for the early Federal-era type collector or the advanced Fugio Cent specialist.
