Lot Description
1820 Matron Head Cent. N-13. Rarity-1. Large Date. MS-63 RB (PCGS). A handsome and fully original example with mottled gray-brown patina to otherwise lustrous, light orange surfaces. Sharply defined in and around the centers with uniformly denticulated borders framing both sides. The obverse has the appearance of near-Gem quality, the reverse displaying scattered carbon spots to explain the assigned grade. Likely from the Randall Hoard, which find has made the 1820 N-13 one of the most popular Mint State type candidates in the Matron Head cent series. Discovered shortly after the end of the Civil War beneath an old railroad platform in Georgia, this hoard contained thousands of high grade cents dated 1816 to 1820. Noyes Die State B/A. Provenance: From the Lux Family Collection, begun as early as the 1850s. PCGS# 36674. Click here for certification details from PCGS.
