Lot Description
1866 Pattern Shield Nickel. Judd-508, Pollock-592. Rarity-6+. Copper. Plain Edge. Proof-64 BN (PCGS). Transitional Pattern issue from the regular dies as adopted in 1867 with No Rays on the reverse. This stunning example shows the elegant design of the Shield nickel but struck in copper. Note the high wire rim around the upper portion of the obverse, and a tiny centering dot within the vertical shield stripes. The surfaces have a dusky brown patina and show a few minor toning specks when closely studied. On the  reverse the top left edge of the 5 shows minor repunching and two tiny center dots reside within the open loop of that figure. A tough issue to find at all with perhaps 15 or so known across the grading spectrum.
