Losbeschreibung
1792 Washington Getz Pattern. Baker-25, W-10775. Small Eagle. Copper. Plain Edge. Fine-12 (PCGS). 279.3 grains. Deep golden-brown with a trace of chocolate-brown around the devices. Evenly worn throughout and only minimally marked given the lengthy stay in commerce or as a pocket piece. Obverse weak at AS, reverse with numerous broken and incomplete letters in the legend. Dies aligned just slightly past medal turn. From an unrusted state of the reverse die and largely conforming to Breen:1352 for type. (It is interesting to note here that Breen wrote: "All of the 1792 issues are among the most historic and the most highly prized of United States coins.") One of just a dozen grading events listed for this rarity at PCGS, with just one of those called Mint State (MS-64 BN); the majority of the PCGS certification events are at VF-20 or lower on the grading scale. Have at it, bidders, for it may a considerable length of time before another Getz 1792 pattern cent of comparable quality becomes available to the numismatic community; underbidders may take heart, however, as a second 1792 Getz pattern cent is in the Craige Collection, though of a slightly lesser quality. When it comes to the Getz patterns, it is wise to buy one when the opportunity presents itself.
