- 1787 Connecticut Copper. Miller 37.3-i, W-4110. Rarity-3. Draped Bust Left. EF-45 (PCGS).
153.7 grains. Called “Extremely Fine, flat strike” in Robert’s notes, we believe this coin to be technically AU, given the amount of mint luster that permeates the fields on both sides. The strike is definitely soft in the middle, with a shower of small planchet flecks on both sides. Well centered, well struck at the peripheries and with a full date, this coin is among the finest and most attractive survivors of the die marriage. Another of the rare non-Newman sale Newman provenanced Connecticuts in this collection.
Provenance: From the Robert M. Martin Collection. Acquired from Eric P. Newman, August 1992.
PCGS #370 and #687367.
