- The highest grade ever bestowed upon a 1901-S Quarter Dollar; the Finest Known example. We are pleased to present for your bidding one of the chief landmarks of this sale, and a coin that, for all intents and purposes, is the most celebrated American silver coin issued in the 20th Century: the ultimate Gem Brilliant Uncirculated 1901-S Barber Quarter.
And when we say ultimate we mean precisely that, since its frosty mint bloom is in the true and proper sense of the word, unparalleled; mint bloom which can only be likened to new fallen snow. Indeed, its bright white lustre is outstanding. As we say, this coin's lustre has that unspoiled appearance. No matter how or where you look - whether it be on the obverse or the reverse and whether it be with your naked eye or your Zeiss magnifying lens - you will find absolutely no break in the smooth texture. Here, there, and everywhere, its hushed elegance overwhelms your eye.
Add to all this that the strike is outstanding, as well, and you see why we tend to wax eloquent about its make-up. As far as rarity is concerned we have only one thing to say: find another like it. There were 72,644 1 901 -S Barber Quarters issued (second lowest in the series). Of these, the greater part found their way into circulation. So, whereas today you may find a fair number in low grade, only a few Uncirculated pieces are known. And fewer of those, moreover, are worthy candidates for grading by the services (NGC and PCGS being today's primary graders). To whit; This is the best example ever seen. No other Mint State 68 1 901 -S's having been seen by either service.
Combine these numbers with the fact only two other individual Barber Quarters have earned NGC's Mint State 68 imprimatur (1895-S and 1898), add in another ( 1 905) seen by PCGS, and you get a resoundingly low population of four pieces for the entire series! Furthermore, those other three, while clearly admirable coins in their own right, are as different as night from day when compared to this handsome 1901-S rarity.
What does all this mean for prospective bidders? What does this say to you? Merely this: Here you have, in one trim package, the finest known, most famous date, most incredibly beautiful Barber Quarter rarity of them all, bar none. A 20th Century American blue-blood among coins; and undeniably the highest graded branch mint rarity as well, certainly among Quarter Dollars, and very probably among silver coins in general. A record price realized is in order.
