Lot Description
Tompkins Die Stage 3/5, Rea et al. Die State c. Representing the latest state of these dies, the reverse is terminal with a heavy break from the lower left border, through the lowest pair of leaves, into the eagle's right leg; there is an internal die chip on the left leaf of the pair. Both dies have been lapped with only light clashmarks remaining, most noticeably the bars at Liberty's ear in the center of the obverse. Lightly toned golden-gray surfaces with enhancing blushes of champagne-pink enlivening the peripheries.
Steve M. Tompkins Commentary: After more than 25 years of searching I was never able to find a nicer example of this scarce die stage. The heavy reverse die crack can be found as a thin break, but not with the die chipping to the leaf. Unfortunately I acquired this coin six months after publishing my book - too late for it to be included as a plate.
