Tompkins Die Stage 4/5, Rea et al. Die State d. Deep steely-charcoal patina on appreciably lustrous, softly frosted surfaces. The typical (for the die pairing) softness is noted for the central reverse, but otherwise this piece is boldly to sharply struck and shows minimal wear. A light, thin scuff at the top rear of Liberty's head is barely noticeable, and the in-hand appearance is actually smooth in the absence of sizeable marks. Particularly nice for the attribution, this coin is not listed in either the 2008 Tompkins or 2010 Rea et al. census. If it were, it would be tied for CC#5 and tied for CC#7, respectively.
The third example of this scarce and challenging Browning number in the Tompkins Reference Collection, this Choice AU represents the penultimate die state of the 1806 B-5 attribution. The reverse is cracked from the upper border outside the letters TY in LIBERTY, to the left top of the Y, and continuing down through the field to the tip of Liberty's nose. Faint cracks also loop from the upper right of the Y to the border (later forming a retained cud), and join the border to the top of the letter I. The reverse die state is most readily identifiable by a light crack from the letters ST in STATES to the border between TA.
Steve M. Tompkins Commentary: Purchased due to the late stage of the dies, I could not pass up the opportunity to acquire this coin when I saw it in the dealer's case at the ANA show, even though I had bought a lower grade example the year before; the lower grade example was quickly sold to help fund this coin. The later die stage is much scarcer than the earlier stage without the obverse die cracks. Another nice original coin.
