Lot Description
An exceptionally vivid example within the certified RB category, virtually complete mint orange color is noted for the reverse. The obverse periphery is likewise mint orange in color, the center lightly toned in lovely steel-olive and pinkish-rose iridescence. Lustrous and satiny throughout with a boldly executed strike.<p>The second mintmarked United States cent, the 1909-S has the lowest mintage in the Indian series with 309,000 pieces produced. These coins were struck in January and February of that year, after which production was halted as the San Francisco Mint prepared to receive the new Lincoln cent dies from Philadelphia. While most examples of this final year Indian issue slipped quietly into circulation, enough were set aside by contemporary numismatists to meet the needs of today's less discerning collectors seeking to assemble a Mint State set of this series. Scarce from a market availability standpoint, this premium Choice Red and Brown example will appeal to advanced bidders.
