Lot Description
118.0 grains. A staple inclusion in any collection of Vermont coppers, Ryder-31 is also known as Vlack 22-88VT. Vlack's Obverse 22, though married to no other reverses, is as much a counterfeit George III halfpenny die as any others with legends reading GEORGIVS III REX. This reverse has a multidisciplinary resume though, appearing on Ryder-25, Ryder-28, and Ryder-29 (with Vermont obverses) and Ryder-39/Miller 1-I (with a Connecticut obverse). This example is well chosen for the Richard August Collection of Machin's Mills halfpence though, as the obverse shows an incredibly firm and well detailed strike, with a high relief portrait showing no gaps or flaws. The surfaces are medium brown with olive and steel, finely granular on both sides but still glossy and attractive. The obverse is aligned to right, with bold denticles at left. Two small curved clips are seen on the right side of the obverse. Two tiny rim nicks are seen near 9 o'clock on the obverse, and a few ancient hairline scratches blend into the central reverse. The reverse is aligned so 17 and the top half of the first 8 is on the planchet, which is more than many of these show. This example displays good balance, elite sharpness, and fine eye appeal. It would be poetic if it was acquired by a Machin's Mills specialist for inclusion in an advanced set of Machin's halfpence.
