Lot Description

Splendid Choice surfaces feature bold central definition and original medium rose color. The 1855 exists in greater numbers than any other half cent in full Red Uncirculated, and this lovely piece from the Widmer Family Collection will certainly appeal to both high grade type collectors and early copper enthusiasts.<p>From a mintage of 56,500 pieces, a total that represents a steep reduction from the figures posted in 1851 and 1853. The return of silver coinage (except the dollar, of course) to domestic circulation after passage of the Act of February 21, 1853, meant that the half cent was again no longer considered a useful denomination for actual commercial use.
