Lot Description
A truly fabulous example of this "transitional" pattern! Struck using a regular 1866 obverse die and regular 1867 or later date with No Rays reverse. Struck in nickel this is a Rarity-5 pattern issue, and the presently offered example is TIED FOR FINEST graded in the non-CAM designation. The incredible mirrors are deep, icy, and essentially FLAWLESS! Nearly a full CAMEO contrast is seen on both sides, with frosted devices standing out against the watery reflective surfaces. A delicate blush of golden iridescent toning graces the surfaces, enhancing the Premium GEM quality and bold eye appeal, and attesting to the originality. PCGS 2, NGC 3, CAC 1. There is no record for a PCGS PR66 ever selling in auction, and the last NGC-graded example sold over 15 years ago! The current PCGS Price Guide value is listed at $6,500 and we know this coin will see spirited bidding when it crosses the block; it will fit nicely in any pattern or shield nickel set. Good luck. Cert. Number 46004109 PCGS # 60703
